The #1 cause of death for teens is suicide.

Teens today are struggling. Out of the 42 million teens in the US researchers with the National Institutes of Mental Health have found that half of them meet the criteria for a mental disorder. In addition, the rates of suicide have steadily been increasing over the last several decades. Today it is now the number one cause of death for teens. What is going on and what can we do in this growing mental health crisis?

Traditional mental health systems are not set up for teens:

    Problem #1

    Therapy is not voluntary and

    the use of deficit-based models

Teens are often forced to meet with a therapist. Teens are not enrolled in the process. To make things worst, therapists use what is called a deficit-based model where they are forced to make a diagnosis for their patients.

    Problem #2

    Therapy is expensive

Insurances do not cover mental health. The typical therapy session runs $100-$200 per 50-minute session. After that, the options available dwindle while prices begin to skyrocket. The typical wilderness therapy or residential treatment program costs over $50,000 (over $500 per day) for 3 months of work.

    Problem #3

    No time commitment

50-minutes per week is simply not enough time to make a deep, everlasting change. You need practice. To improve life one must improve the quality of experiences.

    Pivot Adventure Solution #1

    Enrollment and strength-based approach

The key to learning is enrollment. When we are enrolled in the journey, then we are opening the door of the possibility of change. That's is why everyone applies to get in, even the students. Pivot Adventure is a voluntary experience. We don't care about your resume or the choice that has lead families here.

    Pivot Adventure Solution #2

    Scholarship based

The majority of our applicants are on scholarships. Pivot Adventure uses a combination of donations and private pay in order to keep costs down.

    Pivot Adventure Solution #3

    Commitment to forward motion

Students on average spend 4.5 hours per week with guides. Guides are a combination of recreation therapists, social workers, outdoor specialists and volunteers. Parents spend an additional hour with the guides on parent webinarsl.

  • How do we help?

Pivot Adventure is not counseling. It's not a punishment. It's not grownups telling you how to live your life. Pivot Adventure is a community. A second family. An opportunity to be seen, to be heard, to become your best self. It's a process to change your posture. "People like us do stuff like this." Students participate in one adventure activity per week around their school schedule. No need to be taken out of school or take out a second mortgage to participate.
